Glasgow tribute to Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty

HUNDREDS gathered to commemorate Dublin Volunteer Martin Doherty in the Govan area of Glasgow on Saturday, May 8th, in a series of events organised by the Volunteer Martin Doherty Republican Flute Band  and Cairde na hÉireann.
A parade in memory of Doco was attended by a sizeable crowd and two other bands, the Coatbridge RFB and the Volunteer Seán McIlvenna RFB, as well as various Cairde na hÉireann cumainn.
At the end of the parade a very fitting speech was read out by Cairde na hÉireann National Organiser Franny McAdam, and a message was also read out on behalf of the Doherty family by one of the Doco band members .
The next event organised by the band was the Volunteer Martin Doherty Memorial Football 7-a-side Tournament, now in its second year. Five teams took part and eventual winners FC Twente beat the Coatbridge Cairde na hÉireann side 4-2 in the final.
The last of the events to commemorate Doco in Glasgow was a social function in Govan.
The event was an absolute sell-out with over 250 people in attendance.
Entertainment on the night was provided by a new and upcoming group from Glasgow, The Galtee Mountain Bhoys, and one of Scotland’s  finest rebel bands, Shebeen. The Volunteer Martin Doherty RFB also played a set.
The band would like to thank everyone who made these events so successful and a very fitting tribute to such a brave Volunteer.
