Kesh escaper arrested for extradition

Dermot McNally who escaped from the H-Blocks of Long Kesh in the mass breakout of 1983 was arrested in Sligo on foot of British extradition warrants on 24 April. He has been living openly in Sligo for 12 years.

Sligo Sinn Féin Alderman Sean MacManus slammed the arrest, saying:

``Dermot McNally has been living openly in Sligo for 12 years. This demand for his extradition by the British government can only be seen as vindictive. 14 years have passed since the Long Kesh escape in 1983. The people who will suffer most from Dermot McNally's arrest on extradition warrants are his wife and children.

``A precedent has been set by the Supreme Court in relation to these escapers. Why put the family through unnecessary worry and strain? I appeal to all those who campaigned against extradition to take up this case.''

McNally is due to appear in the Dublin District Court sitting in Green Street today (Thursday).
