Thomas Kavanagh

BY MARCUS FOGARTY

THE month of May was a sad time in republican areas in South Tipperary when it was learned that the staunch republican Thomas Kavanagh had passed away after  a short illness. It was a shock to many people.
He was an inspiration for over 40 years to the younger generation who knew him. He never lost his faith in the belief in peace and justice for all and a 32-county Republic.
The Slieveardagh Hills echoed to the sound of the piper as the funeral cortege made up of his comrades passed through his beloved The Commons on their way to Ballingarry, where Mass was offered. Interment was in the adjoining graveyard where a large gathering of people were in attendance.
The oration at the graveside was given by Michael De Faoite, a life-long friend. Michael said it was a sad day for the village of The Commons and the Republican Movement in South Tipperary “for we bury today a man of high integrity – he was small in stature but larger than life in many other ways, as many people know”.
Over the years, Thomas was involved in many local committees to enhance his community. He gave his time and energy without question. Thomas bore his illness throughout with dignity. He passed away on Wednesday 9 May with members of his family by his bedside.
