Fine Gael interests made approaches to Sinn Féin

Following the General Election, approaches to Sinn Féin were made on behalf of Fine Gael with a view to seeking Sinn Féin co-operation in the Dáil vote for the nomination of Taoiseach.
It is believed that these approaches were initiated by elements within Fine Gael that did not share the view of the Enda Kenny leadership that Sinn Féin should not be dealt with. However, it is believed that the leadership was kept fully informed of the contacts.
For its part Sinn Féin made clear that its door was open to official contacts and that it was willing to talk to all parties. In the event the approaches went no further.
