Prisoners' centre opens

Prisoners' centre opens

Ar Ais ArĂs is the name of the new Drop-In/Training and Education Centre for Tyrone Republican POWs, ex-POWs and their families.

The idea for the centre came from discussions between ex-prisoners and current prisoners and their families throughout 1996. It was established that there was a need for such a service in the area and funding was acquired under the European Peace and Reconciliation package.

The centre is similar to other projects in the Six Counties. It will provide:-

  • training and education in a variety of topics from computers to O and A levels, to helping the children with homework.
  • advice to newly released prisoners about welfare benefits, housing and employment needs
  • a meeting point for prisoners after their release.
  • resources and facilities which will help ex-prisoners reintegrate into their family and community.
The centre is at 60b Irish Street, Dungannon and is open from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday. Two full time members of staff (Paddy and Mickey) can be contacted on (01868) 727128.
