Bloody Sunday remembered across USA

Irish American activists in almost two dozen cities around the United States will hold demonstrations and other activities to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, beginning this week.

In the words of the Irish Northern Aid Committee chairman Paul Doris, ``Irish America has once again shown that it has not forgotten those murdered in Derry on Bloody Sunday''.

The central focus of the US commemorations will be the presence of Matt Morison at many events. Morrison, from Derry, was a witness to the Bloody Sunday massacre. He is now faced with deportation from the US. He will be a guest speaker at the following commemorations;

Cleveland INA hold their Bloody Sunday commemoration on Saturday 25 January in front of the British consulate.

The Kansas City Pat McGeown INA unit sponsor a Bloody Sunday information and literature table in conjunction with the Ancient Order of Hibernians' Freedom For All dinner in the Plaza Embassy Suites Hotel in Kansas on 1 Feburary where Morrision will give an eyewitness account of Bloody Sunday. He will also be a guest speaker at the St Louis, Missouri vigil which begins at 4pm on Friday 31 January and he will be present at the Milwaukee, Winconsin commemoration at Nash's Irish Castle on 8 February.

 


Other commemorative events in the US include a fundraising dinner at the Bedford Texas Legion Hall held by the Dallas/Fort Worth unit of Noraid on Saturday 25 January from 7 to 12pm. Speakers include Sinn Fein's Washington representative Mairéad Keane.

In Houston, Texas the Irish Aires Radio show KPFT-FM 90.1 is airing a special show to commemorate Bloody Sunday on 26 January at 6pm.

Additional marches and commemorations are planned for Long Island on 18 January, Philadelphia on 19, 25 and 29 January, Seattle on 24 January, Washington DC, Dallas and Los Angeles on 25 January, Glastonbury, Connecticut and Houston, Texas on 26 January, San Francisco on 30 January and New York and Trenton, New Jersey on 2 February.

There will also be a commeration in Oslo, Norway on the 30 January.
