North Antrim hosts first Republican Youth Weekend

North Antrim Ógra Shinn Féin is set to host their first ever Republican Youth Weekend on between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 August. The weekend will be based in the Ballintoy area of North Antrim and will consist of revolutionary talks, strategic reviews and social elements such as a sightseeing tour of the Giants Causeway.

Eoin O Broin, himself a former Ógra National Organiser, will talk on the republican struggle and the part youth needs to play in it for it to be successful.

O Broin's talk will be followed by one on the United Irishmen with a special emphasis on their activities in the Antrim area.

The North Antrim weekend will also be the venue for a meeting of Ógra's National Executive which should see a broad ranging discussion on how Ógra is functioning and how it can grow.

Ian Milne, friend and comrade of Volunteer Francis Hughes, who died on Hunger Strike in 1981 will give a talk on his life in the republican struggle. Ian spent many years in Jail in the late 1970's.

These political sessions will be followed by a visit to the Giants Causeway including walking across the rope bridge in what is some of the nicest scenery in Ireland.

On Sunday there will be a protest in Ballymena to remember the victims of British state violence and collusion with unionist paramilitaries.

Speaking ahead of the Republican Youth weekend in the North Antrim area National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin Mickey Bravender said: "The very fact that a Republican Youth Weekend is taking place in North Antrim is a welcome development. It shows the distance Irish republicans have come in the last number of years. It also must be remembered North Antrim has always played its full part in Ireland's freedom struggle. The evidence of this can be seen when we look at such brave men as Volunteer Gerard Casey and Big John Davey. I would like to show my full backing for this weekend and I will certainly be there. This is one event this summer not to be missed!"
