The restructured Belfast cumann of Ógra Shinn Féin is organising a tribute in honour of veteran republican Joe Cahill, who died in July last year.

The tribute, in the form of a mural, is to be unveiled at a ceremony at Britton's Parade on Easter Saturday, with Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly as the main speaker. A newly-erected plaque in memory of dead republican activists and supporters from the area is also to be unveiled.

The ceremony to unveil the mural will be part of a day's events that will see an under-12s GAA blitz in the nearby McCrory Park involving St John's, Gort na Mona, O'Donnell's and the newly-formed Cumann na Fuiseoige.

The teams will play for the Joe Cahill shield, which will be presented to the winners by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams.

Speaking to An Phoblacht, Eamon Conway, chair of Ógra in Belfast, said that they were "enthusiastic about the project which we see as a tribute to a great republican and a man of the people".

Those attending are asked to assemble at the Westrock Remembrance Garden at 1pm on Saturday 26 March.

The day's events will be followed by a function in O'Donnell's GAC Social club afterwards.
