Doherty selected as council candidate
On Friday night last at Teach Jack in Gweedore, the Northwest constituency EU Candidate Pearse Doherty was also selected as the Sinn Féin candidate for the Glenties electoral area for the local elections.
Doherty, who polled almost 2,000 votes in the area in the 2002 General Election, was the only nomination at the packed convention.
Doherty said how humbled he felt to be chosen at this juncture to represent the party at a time when the Government's mismanagement at a national level was causing untold suffering at a local level. He talked about local job losses, dilapidated schools, the exclusion of whole sections of the community, who are being pushed increasingly to the edge of existence
The large throng of energetic and vociferous young people present gave much credence to Doherty's assertion that Sinn Féin is the party of the future.
Guest on the night was Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD, who said he had no doubt that "after the next General Election I will be welcoming Pearse Doherty TD to Leinster House".
