Mick Ned Cournane

The death has taken place of Mick Ned Cournane from Keel, Castlemaine, County Kerry. Mick Ned, who was in his 80s, was a stalwart and committed republican who served the struggle with distinction and remained loyal to the ideals of Irish republicanism right up to his death.

A guard of honour was provided by local republicans at both his removal and interment, which took place in Keel on Friday 23 January. Despite inclement weather conditions, the large attendance was testament to the esteem in which Mick Ned was held.

The oration was delivered by Sinn Féin Tralee Town Councillor, Risteárd Ó Fuaráin, who said that it was an honour to have been asked to pay tribute to such a stalwart republican. Ó Fuaráin said that Mick Ned did not become an active republican for fame or glamour, but rather to achieve the objectives that republicans down through the ages have sought to achieve. He called on all republicans to remain loyal and committed to the struggle prosecuted by Mick Ned to ensure that the objectives of democracy, freedom and justice, which Mick Ned held so dearly, are finally attained.

Mick Ned joins the ranks of countless other republicans from the area who have gone to their eternal reward. Let us not forget their sacrifices.
