We want more than Britney

Ógra Shinn Féin stepped up its anti-globalisation campaign last Thursday by taking part in a Globalise Resistance meeting. The event, held in Dublin's Liberty Hall, was organised to motivate people to attend the next G8 summit in Evian, France, on 1, 2 and 3 June.

Aoife Houlihan spoke on behalf of the youth group, joining a platform of various trade union and political speakers.

She concentrated on what young people can do to combat globalisation. "Ignoring the effect of globalisation is impossible," she said. "As young people we need to accept this, and concentrate on wrenching the power of globalisation away from Rupert Murdoch and Donald Rumsfeld and the rest of them.

"Republicans aspire to a country in which people are treated as human beings, not just consumers of Big Macs, Levis and Britney Spears music."
