The death of Michael Devine

August 20th marks the death of Michael Devine, the 10th republican hunger striker to die in 1981. Born in Derry, Devine grew up in the tumult of the civil rights protests, internment and Bloody Sunday in January 1972. He died after 60 days on hunger strike. The same day that voters in Fermanagh and South Tyrone elected H-Block candidate Owen Carron as an MP. Free article

DID I ever tell you, Enda, about the doorman at Stormont Parliament Buildings who was once a prison officer in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh? Apparently, Raymond McCartney was the O/C in H4 as I understand it and the prison officer in question turned the key to close Raymond’s cell door more often than not. How do I know? IT was great sadness that I learned of the death of Volunteer Eugene O’Neill from Clady in South Derry. Eugene was 51 years of age, he been on the run since the mid-1970s and had only recently returned home.
