Incinerator opposition in Derry

Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry MacLochlainn, welcoming the broadening out of Waste Management consultation in the city over the next number of weeks, has urged the people of Derry to ensure that incineration does not become an option.

MacLochlainn said on Monday: "After the recent waste management information event at the North West Institute, I was anxious to see a widespread consultation on this issue prior to long term decisions being made on this issue.

"I am delighted that local communities will now have the opportunity to make their voice heard and in urging them to take part in the consultation, I would also urge them to make clear their opposition to incineration.

"Decisions are going to be made that will determine whether or not an incinerator is eventually built in this area. I think people need to be able to express clearly their feelings on this matter and the ongoing consultation will be the only chance that people will have.

"I would ask people to read the material that will be coming through their doors and attend any events that they can to discuss the matter. Above all else make sure that you send your views into Derry City Council so that we can act in your best interests and according to your wishes.

"Sinn Féin is on record as opposing incineration as a dangerous and outmoded method of waste disposal. We will continue to press to have incineration ruled out of our waste management strategy. I would appeal to those who agree with us to make their views on this subject known.

"It is too important to allow this decision be made without registering your views."
