Dublin Sinn Féin rejects plans for incinerator

Sinn Féin's six Dublin councillors have spoken out against plans for a waste incinerator that has been proposed for Poolbeg Peninsula.

``People living within a 30 mile radius of Poolbeg Peninsula will face the threat of dioxin emissions from the incinerator if it is built,'' warned Councillor Christy Burke. He addded that the case for incinerators has never been won ``with hard facts''.

``What has been proved, is that the dioxins released from chimneys at these plants are a real threat to the health of people who breath them in. The people of Ringsend and surrounding areas could have deadly gases carried by the wind into their living rooms.

``There have been consistent efforts for six or seven years to locate an incinerator at Poolbeg; all with vigorous opposition from local residents. In one incident planning permission was refused by An Bord Pleanála.

The city manager must now explain what has changed in recent times to warrant the opening of this incinerator.

Just like the campaign four years ago to stop the incinerator in Ringsend and a similar campaign in Derry, Sinn Féin will be actively supporting local residents who are against this proposal.''

Councillor Burke called for a report to be carried out by the Eastern Health Board's Chief Medical Officer in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant bodies ``to establish the true safety status of this project''.
