RTE urged to sanction racist sports commentator

Martin Ferris, has called on the RTE Sports Department to ensure that Sunday Times football writer Brian Glanville is not used by the station in any capacity following his blatantly racist stereotyping on Morning Ireland on Wednesday.

Glanville, commenting on the numerous stories currently doing the rounds about soccer players, claimed that black or West Indian players were more prone to bad behaviour because of their poor education or because they come single parent families.

"Like so many others I was appalled at the blatantly racist and disgustingly arrogant comments of Brian Glanville," said the Sinn Féin TD. "His assertion that black people are more prone to bad behaviour because of their upbringing smacks of the worst kind of British colonialism from the early years of the last century. I would call on RTE's Sports Department to sanction Mr Glanville by making it clear to him that his services as a commentator on sports issues will no longer be required or requested by RTE.

"I would like to commend Des Cahill for so quickly and I believe quite rightly disassociating the programme and the station from Mr Glanville's outrageous comments."
