Roslea Martyrs annual tour

On Sunday 27 April a tour of local monuments and places of interest was organised by local republicans in the Roslea area. The event was attended by over 200 people. Sites visited included where a number of IRA Volunteers had been killed over the years. At each location young women from the locality chaired the proceedings and called on a speaker to address the crowd about the significance of where they were. The tour covered the period from 1798 right up to the present day and was found to be very worthwhile and highly educational by everyone who attended.

One of the highlights of the tour was beside the spot where Seamus McElwaine was assassinated in 1986. Sean Lynch addressed the crowd and paid tribute to Seamus on the day after his 17th anniversary. Sean made the point that even after an inquest that found Seamus McElwaine had been "unlawfully killed", the state continued to cover up its shoot-to-kill policy.

Senior republican Brian Keenan congratulated the organisers of the tour and wished them every success with it for the coming years. He also spoke at a meeting after the tour about the current difficulties in the political process.

The evening was ended by the annual commemoration at Corragunt Bridge. Eddie Collins from County Cork was the main speaker and he was very warmly received.
