Quebec Labour calls on Blair to restore Assembly

The general assembly of the 80,000 strong Montreal Central Council of the CSN trade union federation passed a unanimous motion calling on Tony Blair to restore the Assembly.

The motion came after union delegates heard Montreal Coalition for Peace in Ireland spokesperson, Kevin Callahan, describe how the British government had neither lived up to its obligations under the Good Friday Agreement nor stood up to unionist intransigence.

Callahan was given a standing ovation when he asked the Central Council to send a clear message to Tony Blair that "instead of preparing war on Iraq, he should be dealing with peace in Ireland".

The Montreal Central Council's initiative follows a recent visit to Montreal by Gerry Adams, where the Sinn Féin leader appealed for international support for the Irish peace process.
