Sinn Féin puts a stop to burning of waste

On Friday 2 August, Drogheda Sinn Féin received a number of complaints from residents in the Walshestown, Clogherhead area about the severe problem of rubbish being burnt on a site there.

At about 6.30pm on Saturday, 3 August, four members of Sinn Féin arrived at the scene and could see a smouldering fire. There was nobody in the vicinity of the fire and some pictures were taken. On Tuesday 6 August, several further visits were made to the site in question and again a fire could be seen burning. At this point, Louth Co Council Environmental Section was contacted and they agreed to investigate the site on Wednesday 7 August.

After the meeting between the council official Ciaran Kenny and the workers on site, it was agreed there would be no more burning. It was also agreed that no more waste was to be delivered to the site and that the existing waste would be removed.

Sinn Féin spokesperson in Drogheda, Niall Bannon, said the incident "further highlights the need for the immediate provision of proper recycling facilities in the town".
