Hyland urges councils to adopt bilingual policy

Davy Hyland, chairperson of Newry & Mourne District Council, accompanied Sinn Féin councillor Breandán Lewis and a council official to make a presentation at Enniskillen to Fermanagh District Council on Tuesday 21 May outlining the Bilingual policy practised by Newry & Mourne District Council.

"Some months ago I proposed a motion that the Council should provide Irish language classes and these are now available to council staff, officials and elected members," said Hyland. "Sinn Féin believes that all public authorities and public buildings should operate a bilingual policy.

"Cultural diversity, if embraced in an egalitarian manner, can be an uplifting and enriching experience. The Irish Diaspora is recognised in countries throughout the world by its unique blend of language, music and dance.

"I am therefore hopeful before my time as chairperson has concluded that other councils will follow the example set by Newry & Mourne District Council."
