Mary Murphy

The three Sinn Féin cumainn in Newry town and the wider republican family would like to extend their condolence to the Murphy family on the death of their mother.

It was with great sadness and loss that we heard of the death of Mary Murphy (née Kearney), aged 88, from 18 Blaney Crescent, Newry. Mary was born in March 1914 and married James Murphy. They were blessed with a large family of ten girls and four boys.

All through the last 30 years of struggle, Mary and members of her family were to be found on picket lines and protests. At the age of 82, she attended her last protest in William Street, Newry, calling for the disbandment of the RUC.

Mary loved everything Irish and she supported all the "Irish Night" functions in the area. Her long-standing support for republicanism has been handed down to her children. To the present day, two sons and a daughter are weekly sellers of An Phoblacht in their local area.

The large number of people attending her funeral was evidence of the respect in which Mary was held in her own community. Her Tricolour-draped coffin was carried by six of her daughters from her son's residence to the local cemetery. She will always be remembered with fondness by her daughters, sons, 47 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Go ndeana Dia trócaire ar a anam dílis.
