Sean Sabhat Commemoration

Over 200 people attended the annual Sean Sabhat Commemoration in Limerick last Sunday, 6 January. This year's commemoration marked the 45th anniversary of the deaths of IRA volunteers Sean Sabhat and Fergal O'Hanlon as a result of an attack on Brookeborough RUC barracks in Co. Fermanagh on New Years Day 1957.

The march assembled at Bedford Row in the city centre and proceeded to the Republican Plot, Mount St. Lawrence Cemetery. The graveside proceedings were chaired by Gary Madden of Limerick Sinn Féin and wreaths were laid.

The oration was delivered by Clones-based Sinn Féin Cllr Pat Treanor. He called republicans "to take up the tasks that lie ahead", in order to ensure that when Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin returns to Leinster House after the next election he has plenty of republican company. During his address, Cllr. Treanor criticised the Dublin government for refusing to fully implement the Good Friday Agreement and called for "the release of all prisoners who are associated with military groups on cessation". He pointed out at the fact that the Dublin government is in breach of the Agreement as long as it is holding the Castlerea 5 and called for their immediate release.
