Large crowd pay tribute to Charlie Kerins

I dTrá Lí ar an Aoine, tháinig slua mór le cheile ag Comoradh Chathal Ó Chiaráin, a fuair bás ar an chéad lá de Mhí na Nollag 1944.

A large crowd gathered in Tralee last night Friday. The march led by colour party, flag bearers and the Ballyseedy Martyrs Band made it's way from the 1798 Memorial in Denny Street to the Charlie Kerins Memorial on Strand Road.

Wreaths were laid by Mary O‚Sullivan, Francie Boyle and Jerry Savage. In his oration, Kerry Sinn Fein's Risteárd Ó Fuaráin spoke of the tremendous courage of Charlie Kerins who, in the words of Bobby Sands, 'stared wide-eyed and unafraid'‚ as he faced his executioner on the gallows at Mountjoy.

"Irish people of all different s hades and backgrounds will decide their own future free from outside interference. On that day, we will be able to write the epitaph of Charlie Kerins and the world will see that the struggle, which he prosecuted, was not in vain. Let us work continuously towards that certain day.
