Republicans take Queens

Unionist domination of Belfast's Queens University Student Council dramatically ended last week with the election of five republicans in the college last week, a clean sweep of the seats on offer.

Sandy Marshall, Léon Ó hAodhagáin, Elodie Ducloux, Brenda McCabe and Ciarán Dunbar were all elected to positions on the Student Council. As the student population in Queens is now over 60 per cent nationalist, the five said that their objective was to ensure that the Council reflects the views of the students it is mandated to represent.

DUP supporters walked out of the count, in apparent disgust, after their sole candidate, Richard Scott, who stood for the position of Cultural Affairs Officer, was beaten by almost 100 votes by Brenda McCabe.

The five say they plan to implement a radical programme for Queens students in the coming year.
