Lignite fears raised
At a public meeting organised by Cookstown and Western Shores (CWSAN) in Kinturk Cultural Centre on 26 September, local people voiced their concerns at the prospect of open-cast mining in the area to officials of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI) and a representative of Anglo Pacific Group.
Cookstown District Council chair, Sinn FÈin's Pearse McAleer, said that the people of the area had already expressed their fears about open-cast mining. He explained that the people were aware of all the issues, that they had in the past conducted a very successful campaign against such mining and that they would do so again.
