Letterkenny hunger strike memorial

Letterkenny in Co. Donegal remembered the 1981 hunger strikers at a ceremony held by the Donegal `81 Committee last weekend in conjunction with Letterkenny UDC. A memorial stone was unveiled by guest speaker and former hunger striker Raymond McCartney at a memorial garden in the Green Area, Glenboe, which is situated at the rear of the Glencar Inn in Letterkenny.

The memorial stone is surrounded by ten trees, dedicated to each of the ten fallen 1981hunger strikers, a symbol of how each of these brave young men touched the people of Letterkenny and how they live on in the memories of local people. Over 100 people attended the ceremony on Saturday 15 September, including family members of Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch and Micky Devine, which was chaired by Councillor Kieran Brogan.

Political representatives in attendance were Pat Doherty MP, Sinn Féin Councillors Jarlath McNulty from Strabane, Clare Magill from Plumbridge, Sean Conlon from Monaghan. Harry Blaney TD, UDC Councillors Dessie Larkin, Sean Maloney, Albert Doherty and Niall Blaney. The absence of any Fianna Fáil representative was noted and in particular that of Terry McEniff, who seconded Councillor Kieran Brogan's motion for the trees and memorial stone.
