Jackie Griffith commemoration

Martin Ferris addressed a commemoration held in Dublin last weekend to commemorate the death of Volunteer Jackie Griffith, shot down by Special Branch detectives on 4 July 1943 as he cycled past the junction of Merrion Square and Holles Street.

The attendance of around 150 people included the fallen Volunteer's brother, Gerry, who travelled from Manchester, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, to attend the commemoration. The event formed the centrepiece of a weekend of events organised by Dublin South East Inner City Sinn Féin, which included a public meeting on the hunger strikes on Friday evening and the unveiling of a mural dedicated to the hunger strikers at the Widow Scallan's pub on Pearse Street, scene of the 1994 assassination of IRA Volunteer Martin Doherty.

Seán Mac Diarmada commemoration to go ahead

Sunday 8 July

The annual Seán Mac Diarmada commemoration, postponed in May due to the Foot & Mouth crisis, will now take place on Sunday next, 8 July. As this date is the 20th anniversary of the late H Block hunger striker and Sligo-Leitrim election candidate, Joe McDonnell, the occasion will have a special significance this year.

There will be a short march and commemoration service at 3pm in Manorhamilton, with the traditional events in Kiltyclogher at 4pm on the day.

The organisers expect two marching bands and a number of the recently successful election candidates from Fermanagh/South Tyrone to attend on the day, so a great time is assured for all.
