Wexford councillor attacked

John Dwyer, recently chosen as a Sinn Féin candidate for Wexford, suffered a vicious attack outside his house on Tuesday, at the hands of two young men probably ``high as kites'' who seemingly have connections with local criinal gangs.

John wrestled one to the ground but the other beat John's head with a glass bottle, causing some 50 stitiches to his head.

John says he was lucky and got surgical treatment almost immediaely after his arrival in Waterford Hospital. ``This simply underlines the need in our society to look at the causes which encourage young people to seek resort to drugs as a response to the privations of their daily lives,'' said Dwyer.
