Back issue: Sinn Féin attends Fete de l'Humanite

FOR the third successive year Sinn Féin was represented at the famous Fete de l'Humanite on the outskirts of Paris, the biggest gathering of progessive movements from around the world.

Last year an estimated two milion people attended the three-day festival which houses , in one huge section, an international site accommodating over 50 stands. This year was no exception, with hugwe numbers flocking to see various exhibitions put on by the many national liberation movements in attendance.

Among those present were delegates from the ANC, SWAPO, Nicaraghua, el Salvador, the Philippines, sereral Palestinian groups, as well as Sinn Féin. Each group had a stand at which political materials could be bought along with handcrafts. In addition most also provided music particular to their struggle.

The Sinn Féin delegation included Deirdre McManus and Chrissie McAuley of the Foreign Affairs Bureau and Richard McAuley of the Comhairle na Sé Condae. They were kept busy during the three days of the festival using this unique opportunity to renew old friendships and make new contacts among many delegations. Before returning to Belfast the Sinn Féin delegation took part in a picket of the British Embassy, organised by the Paris branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, against the British Government decision to vet politically Glór na nGael in Belfast. The picket was well attended and caused greta concern to embassy staff.
