Coughlan scores in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional for RTE to allocate referendum broadcasts on an unequal basis between the political parties and other groups, such that one side of the Yes/No division can be significantly advantaged over the other.

The Supreme Court vindicated TCD lecturer and longtime anti-European federalist campaigner Anthony Coughlan in a judgement delivered on Wednesday, 26 January. The decision reinforces the Supreme Court's 1995 McKenna judgement regarding the use of public money in constoitutional referendums and effectively means that each side in any future referendum campaign will receive equal broadcast time.
