500th day of Garvaghy siege marked
The Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition is to host a public meeting to mark the 500th day of siege, which falls on Saturday, 13 November. The debate, entitled ``freedom from sectarian harassment; a reality or aspiration'' will begin at the local community centre at 1.30pm and will include a number of prominent speakers. Irish News columnist Brian Feeney is scheduled to address the debate.
``This is the first of a series of public discussions to be organised by residents' groups in the run up to Christmas,'' says Breandán Mac Cionnaith. The second meeting will be held in Derry on Saturday, 27 November, a third on 4 December in Lisnaskea and the last on the Ormeau Road on 11 December.
Meanwhile, the Orange Order's request to march down the Garvaghy Road this Sunday has been turned down by the Parades Commission. The Commission said it was the only decision it could take in the absence of local accommodation.
The Poppy Day parade will pass St John's Chapel on its way to Drumcree Parish Church. A rally organised by Orange Grand Lodge and Portadown district is also scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon.
