School denying sectarian attack

A Catholic teacher at the Protestant Boy's Model school in Belfast's Ballysillan Road was the target of a sectarian gun attack, An Phoblacht has learned.

The female teacher was in class during last week when a number of shots were fired in the staunchly loyalist Ballysillan area of North Belfast. She was unhurt, but sources say that the windows were broken and strike marks were left on the wall.

People who contacted An Phoblacht have also told us the incident has been deliberately kept quiet as the education authorities and the school want to avoid bad publicity.

When we contacted the principal of the school, Jim Keith, he admitted that there was an incident last week but denied that it was sectarian. He claimed that shots were fired from a .177 air rifle in the direction of the school but contrary to our source he claimed that no glass was broken and there were no strike marks.

The woman teacher has now moved to a job in the Belfast Education and Library Board, a move Jim Keith said, was not related to the shooting incident.
