New women's policy launch

Speaking at the launch in Derry of the party's new policy document Women in Ireland on Friday, 4 June, Sinn Féin Assembly member Michelle Gildernew said: ``As a vibrant, progressive political party with a strong community base, Sinn Féin is equal to the task of ensuring a truly inclusive political culture for a new Ireland.''

Women in Ireland, formally adopted at the recent Sinn Féin ard fheis, is a comprehensive document dealing with issues confronting women in Irish society and it is hoped that it will encourage debate and discussion.

It addresses the lack of equal opportunities for women and the problems encountered by women in politics and employment.

It also deals with the various forms of violence against women such as sexual harassment, pornography and domestic violence.

The meeting was chaired by Sinn Féin Assembly member Mary Nelis, who described the document as innovative and progressive. She said she was particularly impressed by the large and diverse turn out at the launch. ``I am sure this document will provoke quite a stimulating debate, not just within Sinn Féin but within various other groups and organisations,'' she said.
