Fógraí bháis: Frank McLaverty - a tireless worker on behalf of the republic.
Frank McLaverty from Andersonstown in West Belfast who died on February 2 1999 after a long illness, was a life long republican who will be sadly missed by republicans throughout the city and further afield.
As a founding member of the Roddy McCorley Society, whose work on behalf of republican causes is renowned, Frank was President of the Roddy's at the time of his death.
Founded in the mid-sixties the Roddy's is the meeting place for writers groups and and has it's own group, of which Frank was a member. Indeed according to those who knew him he had a gift for poetry. Added to this Frank tried his hand at acting and appeared in many plays and was a member of many theatre and drama groups.
One of Frank's boasts was that he was willing to help the republican cause in any way he could. It was not an idle boast as his door was always open to republicans who were always welcomed in his home.
His contributions to the work of the Roddy's on behalf of prisoners and prisoners' welfare was something dear to his heart and as a member of the Linen Hall Library on behalf of the Roddy's he spent many a day there unearthing facts and information about republicanism over the last 200 years which was useful for the many debates and discussions the Society had.
On his many trips to New York for St Patrick's Day Frank would head off with an armful of Republican News's and come back with no unsold copies.
To his wife Nel, his family and his friends and comrades in Roddy's he will be sadly missed but always remembered. Ar lámh dheis De go raibh a anam usual.
