Pikemen to lead local republican commemoration

Hundreds of republicans including a contingent of pikemen from County Fermanagh will attend this Sunday's annual counties Derry and Antrim republican commemoration.

Announcing details of this year's commemorative parade, Sinn Fein councillor, Seamus O'Brien said, ``a colourful parade will assemble at Ballymaguigan Hall at 2.pm sharp amd marchers will make their way to the Republican Plot at Newbridge churchyard. A wreath-laying ceremenoy will take place at the grave of IRA Volunteers Jim Sheridan, John Bateson and Martin Lee.

A leading member of Sinn Fein will give the oration and ceremonies will include the reading of the roll of honour.

Councillor O'Brien said the Fermanagh Pikemen would be given the honour of leading the parade which has for its theme Liberty, Equality and Fraternity as this year marks the 200th anniversary of the United Irish rebellion of 1798.

Sunday's event is organised by the counties Derry and Antrim Republicsan Graves Association.
