Sinn Féin in Basque Country after ETA statement
SINN FÉIN’S Bairbre de Brún MEP and Alex Maskey MLA travelled to the Basque country in the last fortnight at the request of Abertzale Left.
Sinn Féin has been engaged with the situation in the Basque country for some time and this latest engagement is a continuation of their support for the current peace initiative following ETA’s statement declaring a ceasefire.
On Friday morning, September 17th, they addressed a press conference in Bilbao. This was well-attended and was positively covered by both print and TV mainstream media.
On Friday afternoon, Bairbre and Alex met with Adierazi EH, representatives of a consortium which includes 44 organisations from within the wider Basque civic society.
On Friday evening they met with PNV, the Basque Nationalist Party. They also had a number of private engagements with other political parties during the course of their stay.
A Sinn Féin spokesperson told An Phoblacht:
“Sinn Féin’s visit was received in a very positive way, both publicly and privately, and we will continue to engage constructively on this issue as the process develops.”
