Childcare plan is a major disappointment – Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Kathleen Funchion TD has said that there will be huge disappointment at the childcare plan brought forward by the government this week.

Sinn Féin has called for:

  • Childcare workers to remain on the temporary wage subsidy childcare scheme and for temporary assistance to childcare providers to be maintained to help cover bills at a time of reduced capacity. This would be an opt-in scheme and would keep 27,000 workers in employment, ensure that childcare providers can remain open and reduce childcare fees to parents by up to two thirds.
  •  Paid maternity leave to be extended from six to nine months for mothers whose maternity benefit claim expires during the pandemic - if they wish to avail of it.
  • Parents who can’t go back to work due to the unavailability of childcare to be entitled to take parental leave which would allow them to keep their job and receive income support from the State until they can return to work. Parents who currently can't get back to work due to lack of childcare are coming under pressure from some employers according to FLAC. This matter is urgent.

Speaking on Virgin Media’s The Tonight Show on this issue on Wednesday evening Mary Lou McDonald said there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that a combination Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will deliver on public services.

Michelle O’Neill has also stressed the need for to put childcare at the heart of any conversation on returning to work in the North saying people need immediate solutions to the issue of childcare provision.

Scéim Chúram Leanaí ina Ábhar Mór Díomá -Kathleen Funchion TD

Deir Kathleen Funchion TD, Urlabhraí Leanaí agus Gnóthaí Óige, go mbeidh an-díomá ann nuair a chuireann an rialtas an scéim chúram leanaí i láthair an tseachtain seo.

Éilíonn Sinn Féin seo a leanas:

  • Go leanfaidh an scéim fóirdheontais pá sealadach d’oibrithe cúram leanaí agus go leanfaidh an cúnamh cíosa sealadach atá ar fáil do sholáthraí cúram leanaí i rith an ama seo. Scéim roghnach a bheadh ann a thabharfadh tacaíocht do 27,000 fostaí dífhostaithe, a chinnteodh go leanfadh soláthraithe lena seirbhís agus go dtiocfaidh laghdú dhá thrian ar tháillí cúram leanaí.

  • Síneadh ama a thabhairt d’Íocaíochtaí tréimhse mháithreachais ó sé go naoi mí do na máithreacha a mbeidh deireadh lena n-éilimh liúntais – más mian leo leas a bhaint as.

  • Go mbeidh tuismitheoirí nach bhfuil sé de chumas acu filleadh ar an obair, gan teacht acu ar chúram leanaí, i dteidil tacaíocht ioncaim ón Stát agus cinnteacht phoist go dtí go bhfilleann siad ar an obair. Dar le FLAC, tá tuismitheoirí nach bhfuil sé ar chumas acu filleadh ar an obair faoi bhrú óna bhfostóirí dul ar ais ar obair. Caithfear dul i ngleic leis seo láithreach bonn.

Mhaígh May Lou Mac Donald agus í ag labhairt ar The Tonight Show de chuid Virgin Media, nach bhfuil seans na ngrást go soláthróidh comhrialtas idir Fine Gael agus Fianna Fáil a leithéid de shéirbhísí poiblí.
