Black Lives Matter – Mary Lou McDonald

Speaking in the Dáil this week Mary Lou McDonald said the Live of George Floyd matters and Black Lives Matter.

Mary Lou said Sinn Féin stands in solidarity with all in the US who face into the reality of systemic racism.

She went on to say that we in Ireland have to do our bit and a first step would be to dismantle the disgraceful system of direct provision.

Also speaking on this issue in the Assembly this week Sinn Féín MLA Emma Sheerin said any form of racism or discrimination should never be tolerated in our society and expressed solidarity with those campaigning for justice for George Floyd.

New Black Lives Matter mural on Belfast’s International Wall

Meanwhile Michelle O’Neill MLA, Leas Uachtarán Shinn Féin and West Belfast MP Paul Maskey have welcomed the painting of a new mural on Belfast's international wall in solidarity with the 'Black Lives Matter' campaign and to the family of George Floyd who was brutally murdered by Minneapolis police officers.

Government needs to prevent banks from profiting on hardship and misery – Pearse Doherty TD

Speaking from Leinster House this week Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty said banks are still charging interest during repayment breaks on mortgages and loans as a result of the pandemic. 

He said this cannot be allowed to continue. The Government needs to step in and prevent banks from profiting on people's hardship and misery.

Sinn Féin Renters Survey

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing Eoin Ó Broin TD has this week launched an online survey to see how renters across the State are coping during Covid-19. Latest figures show rent supplement figures increased by 33% during the pandemic.

If you are a renter, if you have lost income due to Covid–19, or if you have fallen into rent arrears and are worried about the future then Eoin wants to hear from you.

Mary Lou holds live online discussion on childcare

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey and MLA Catherine Kelly also recently met 75 childcare providers on Zoom about the future of childcare after the Covid-19 crisis. 

Speaking afterwards they said childcare is an absolutely vital service and helps support frontline staff and ensures that workers and families get a break.

Remembering the past: Republican News and Jimmy Steele - 50th anniversary

The split in the IRA and Sinn Féin led to the establishment of An Phoblacht as the national republican newspaper in January 1970. Six months later republicans in the Six Counties founded Republican News under the editorship of Jimmy Steele.
