Communities have rallied magnificently – Mary Lou McDonald

Speaking in the Dáil this week Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said communities have rallied magnificently in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and welcomed government plans to publish a roadmap for the lifting of restrictions.

Mary Lou is concerned following the Taosieach's refusal to commit to the level of testing required to ensure the safe lifting of restrictions.   She made the comments as Leo Varadkar has confirmed that the target of reaching 100,000 Covid-19 tests per week remains a target for capacity only and not for the carrying out of actual tests on the ground.

Borrowers must be protected from owing extra interest due to payment break extensions – Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has welcomed the decision by the retail banks and other lenders to extend payment breaks from three to six months for borrowers affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

Deputy Doherty has written to the Central Bank and the five retail banks calling for this to be accompanied by an interest break, as customers currently face paying thousands more in interest if they apply for a payment break.

Legislation to protect renters passes through Assembly

Legislation from Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey, to protect renters and stop evictions, passed through the Assembly this week. 

Minister Hargey said; "This legislation is crucial to protect private renters, ensuring that if they don't have the financial means to pay their rent during the Covid-19 crisis, they will not be evicted"

Economic interests must not take primacy over Public Health - Declan Kearney

Sinn Féin Chairperson Declan Kearney has penned his latest article for An Phoblacht in which he argues that economic interests must not take primacy over public health in any discussions on exiting the Covid-19 lockdown.

He also argues that new all island approaches are needed towards public health and the economy in Ireland beyond this health emergency, and that multilateralism must guide future international relations in the face of future global challenges.
