Loyalist flags appear in mixed areas – PSNI challenged on 2014 pledge

SINN FÉIN MLA Alex Maskey has called on the PSNI to state whether the erection of flags in mixed areas is still being treated as a breach of the peace after loyalist and unionist flags appeared in various parts of Belfast in recent days.

“In June 2014 I met with the PSNI’s senior leadership team in south and east Belfast after concerns about flags being erected in mixed areas,” the Sinn Féin Assembly member said.

“At that meeting the PSNI stated that the erection of flags in mixed areas would be treated as a breach of the peace and this was followed by a public statement.

“The PSNI now need to clarify if that position still holds.

“All traditions should be respected in a way that does not cause offence to anyone in the community.”
