Irish state Easter Rising commemoration ' nothing in common' with ideals of 1916

THE Galway Alliance Against War has dubbed the Irish state’s centenary celebrations as a “jamboree that has nothing in common with the goals of those who took up arms against empire one hundred years ago”.

Spokesperson Niall Farrell said:

“As Irish military jets scraped the skies above Dublin on Sunday, US military planes en route to imperial wars were both landing at Shannon Airport and crossing Irish airspace. In other words, the Irish Establishment has betrayed the goals of those who rose up on Easter Monday 1916 for Irish independence from empires of whatever hue and from imperial wars.”

He said that the 1916 Proclamation, “the birth certificate of an Irish Republic”, was unequivocal about Irish independence from empires.

“Since 2001, the Irish Establishment has betrayed that proclamation through its involvement in multiple foreign imperialist wars. No spectacular jamboree in Dublin can hide that fact,” he said.

“Nor can it hide the reality that the society of equals aspired to by the 1916 rebels has never been achieved. Ireland is a most unequal society, where the Irish people are being made to pay for the excesses of bankers and speculators, both foreign and native.”
