Belfast bomb attack on prison officer – 'futile actions' should end

Sinn Féin Policing spokesperson Gerry Kelly MLA

THE BOMB ATTACK in east Belfast on Friday that injured a prison officer has been criticised by Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly, Assembly spokesperson on Policing, who called for an end to such “futile actions”.

He hoped the man injured makes a speedy recovery and added:

“There can be no place for such attacks in our society.

“Those behind attacks like this represent no one and have nothing to offer the community.

“They need to listen to the views of the vast majority of people in our society call an immediate end to these futile actions.”

Sinn Féin deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness added that the people behind the attack need to reflect on the futility of their actions and realise there is no prospect of them achieving anything in this way.

“There is absolutely no justification for people to engage in violence against the backdrop of the transformation of our society over the last 20 years.

“The overwhelming majority of our society supports the Peace Process and wants to see progress continuing to be made. We are committed to ensuring that we keep moving forward.”
