Sinn Féin's Denise Mitchell unseats Labour's Aodhán Ó Riordáin
Gerry Adams, Denise Mitchell, Mary Lou McDonald and running mate Mícheál Mac Donncha celebrate their victory in Dublin Bay North
SINN FÉIN'S Denise Mitchell has been elected as TD for Dublin Bay North after a mammoth count in the RDS. The result means that high profile Labour Party Minister of State Aodhán Ó Riordáin has lost his seat.
Denise's election in the newly-formed constituency, along with independents Tommy Broughan and Finian McGrath on the 15th count meant Labour Party Minister of State Aodhán Ó Riordáin lost his seat in what was previously considered a Labour Party stronghold.
Sinn Féin ran two candidates in the constituency, the other being Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha whose transfers were key to keeping Denise in contention for a seat.
Born and raised in Coolock, where she lives with her husband Alan and young family, Denise was first elected to Dublin City Council in 2014 representing the Beaumont–Donaghmede ward.
She has been active for many years working alongside Councillor Larry O'Toole on housing issues as well as campaigning against cutbacks to Beaumont Hospital.
She is also heavily involved in anti-water charges campaigns in the area.
Others elected in the ward include Fine Gael's Richard Bruton and Fianna Fáil's Seán Haughey.
