Dáil Election – Good turnout among young and working-class voters key
VOTER TURNOUT amongst younger voters and in working class communities will be key to the outcome of the election. A low turnout at today's General Election will disproportionately benefit the Government parties and Fianna Fáil, statistics show.
72% of those aged 55 or more – the group who are also the most likely citizens to turn out and vote on the day – say they intend to vote for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael or Labour.
This drops significantly to just 47% for younger voters, with 53% telling pollsters they will vote for Sinn Féin, Independents or small parties.
The research, part of a recent RedC opinion poll, showed support for Sinn Féin is strongest in the 18–34 and 35–54 year age categories, and weakest for those aged 55 or more.
Wealthy citizens – who traditionally are more likely to vote – were the strongest supporters of Fine Gael, while working–class and middle-income voters lean towards Sinn Féin and Independents.
