Martin McGuinness in dramatic return to Foyle for Assembly election?
MARTIN McGUINNESS MLA is set to make a dramatic return to the Foyle constituency from Mid Ulster in the Assembly election, the Derry Journal claims.
Citing “sources”, the Journal says it understands the Derryman and deputy First Minister will seek his party’s nomination to contest the Stormont poll in the Foyle constituency at the AGM of its Cúige Uladh at the Millennium Forum in Derry City on Saturday.
Up to 600 people are expected to attend, including senior party leaders.
The Derry Journal adds:
“Sinn Féin sources say the move is part of Sinn Féin’s campaign to win three seats in Derry.”
Republican commentator and former Sinn Féin Director of Publicity Danny Morrison tweeted:
“Will Martin McGuinness standing in Foyle result in 3 SF seats and 2 for the SDLP, reversing electoral history?”
Sinn Féin already has two seats in the Foyle constituency, held by Maeve McLaughlin and Raymond McCartney.
The Sinn Féin Press Office has declined to comment on the story ahead of Saturday's event in Derry City.
