Scotland's highest mountain scaled in cancer charity climb

BEN NEVIS, Scotland's highest mountain, was without a doubt the most challenging cancer charity fundraising climb undertaken so far by far by Caitríona Ní Cheallaigh and Barry McColgan. “But it was also the most rewarding,” the couple told An Phoblacht.

“Ben Nevis is the highest mountain we've climbed.” Barry said from Scotland. “There was heavy snow from 700metres up to the summit at 1,344metres and the wind literally lifted us off our feet on a few occasions.

“Despite the Arctic weather conditions, the views of the Highlands and Glens of Scotland were spectacular and to raise over £2,000 for a local cancer charity made it all worthwhile.”

After climbing Ireland's highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, in the summer, the couple wanted to 'up' the challenge.

“Catherine's Granda Joe Kelly lost his battle with cancer 10 years ago and we thought it would be a nice tribute too him if we climbed on the month of his anniversary,” Barry continued.

“We also chose to fundraise for a local charity, Termonmaguirc Cancer Patients' Comfort Fund, as they had helped him.

“At the most challenging of times during the climb, the unbelievable support we received and the memory of Catherine's Granda kept us going.”
