The Irish Volunteer - Óglach na hÉireann, Volume 2, Number 36

• T.P. O’Connor

The extent to which the Irish Party at Westminster has become wedded to Imperialism during the war is highlighted with a quote from one of the leading Home Rule MPs, T.P. O’Connor, who was also a well-know journalist. O’Connor declared: “By England I mean, of course, all the British Isles which she symbolizes at this moment.” Eoin Mac Néill defends himself against the charges from the Hone Rulers that he had been in the pay of the British government. He points out that he was a clerk in the Four Courts for 22 years, having obtained the post by open competition. The paper points out that the Irish Volunteers conducted all the military arrangements for the O’Donovan Rossa funeral and “were responsible for the peace, order and traffic arrangements of Dublin”.
