Scotland's Cairde Republican Youth in the Six Counties

• With Gerry Adams at Divis Street

FOURTEEN YOUNG PEOPLE from Cairde Republican Youth in Scotland visited Ireland for an educational trip in late September on the theme of the 1981 H-Blocks Hunger Strike.

The visit included visits to many sites of struggle, including where the Hunger Strikers came from and their last resting places.

Linking up with the Mairéad Farrell Republican Youth Committee in Belfast, Cairde Republican Youth were also hosted by Derry Sinn Féin and visited the Hills of O’Neills, Crumlin Road Jail, Bombay Street, the Roddy McCorley Museum, and attended the plaque unveiling to mark the 50th anniversary of the Divis Street ‘Tricolour riots’.

During our time in Derry, we had political discussions with local Councillor Colly Kelly, Dale Moore from the Sinn Féin Six-County Executive, Caolan McGinley from Derry Sinn Féin Republican Youth, and MEP Martina Anderson.

In Belfast, we received a political update from Junior First Minister Jennifer McCann MLA.

Cairde Republican Youth presented the Mairéad Farrell Republican Youth members with a plaque as a token of solidarity and comradeship.

On our last day of the trip we visited Stormont, where we met the leadership of the party and also participated in an interview for An Phoblacht TV.

Cairde Republican Youth in Scotland would like to thank everyone who contributed to the weekend’s events, too many to mention but nevertheless very much appreciated.
