Discontent among many Volunteers at the rumours of their being taken over as part of the British Army is reflected in a letter from W.K McDonald and headed ‘Ireland not the Empire’. Elsewhere Volunteers are advised to “come to your drills as if you were going to see your best girl – clean shaven and with a hair-cut.”
