The Irish Volunteer - Volume 1 - Number 22
A parade of 450 Volunteers in Tralee, C. Kerry, is reported. PH Pearse gave a stirring address and he is reported as saying that it is “a national defence force which was not going to be disbanded by any politicians in Ireland or in England”. It is clear from Pearse’s speech that he sees the Volunteers as an independent force, not to be controlled by Redmond. The flow of verse continues despite an appeal in the previous issue to use poets for target practice!
