Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi meets Sinn Féin

Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi meets Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly MLA, Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA, Paul Maskey MP and Alex Maskey MLA

‘Like political activists here in Ireland struggling for freedom and democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has faced years of imprisonment, censorship and harassment from the Government’

BURMESE pro-democracy campaigner and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with a Sinn Féin delegation in Stormont on Thursday during a brief visit to the North.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner and former political prisoner was welcomed at Stormont by junior ministers Jonathan Bell of the DUP and Jennifer McCann of Sinn Féin.

The Sinn Féin delegation meeting Aung San Suu Kyi – Paul Maskey MP, Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill and MLAs Gerry Kelly and Alex Maskey – discussed developments both here in Ireland and in Burma (also known as Myanmar).

Paul Maskey said:

“The work and achievements of Aung San Suu Kyi in promoting democracy in Burma are well-known. Like political activists here in Ireland struggling for freedom and democracy, she has faced years of imprisonment, censorship and harassment from the Government.

“We had a conversation and spoke at length about lessons of the Irish Peace Process and how the pro-democracy campaign is progressing in Burma.

“It is important that we exchange views and ideas in advancing the cause of equality and freedom and this meeting was a worthwhile exercise in moving that forward.”
